Real neon vs LED

Why real glass neon still matters

LED took most of the channel-letter market in the 2000s, and it has its place. But LED "neon" is a plastic strip imitating a look. Real neon is the original: a glass tube filled with gas that glows the full way around.

  • A soft, 360-degree glow. Light comes off every side of the tube, which gives neon its depth and warmth.
  • Color from the gas itself. Neon burns a warm red-orange; argon in coated or colored glass gives blues, greens, pinks and whites.
  • Repairable, not disposable. A broken tube can be re-bent or re-pumped, which is why vintage signs keep coming back to life.
  • Made by a person. Every letter is bent by hand over a flame, so no two signs are exactly alike.

Weighing neon against LED for your space and budget? We're happy to talk it through honestly.

How every job moves through the shop

New sign or repair, the craft is the same: hand, flame, vacuum and gas. Here's what happens between your call and the first glow.

  1. Step 01

    Design

We turn your sketch, logo or wording into a full-size pattern, or map out exactly which tubes on your existing sign need work.

  2. Step 02

    Bend

Glass tubing is heated over the flame and bent by hand to match the pattern, curve by curve and letter by letter.

  3. Step 03

    Bombard

Electrodes go on, then the tube is heated in a bombarder to drive out impurities so the glow stays clean.

  4. Step 04

    Pump & Fill

Each tube is pumped down to a vacuum and backfilled with neon for warm reds or argon for blues, greens and whites.

  5. Step 05

    Light Up

The finished work is lit and tested, then handed over with our one-year guarantee on all work.
